Selby and Goole Badger Watch -

Discover more about the SELBY AND GOOLE BADGER WATCH

Never heard of us? Never knew we existed?

That's perfectly understandable.  You could say we keep on the down low.  We work quietly and below the radar.  Social media's not really our thing, not yet anyway.

The sole purpose of Selby and & Goole Badger Watch is to focus on badgers, although we will always help any animal in need, whatever the species.

We have many years experience in badger related issues but at the same time we are always willing to update our skills and knowledge as the science changes.

Back in the day, we read books by Ernest Neal, circa 1948, but times have changed, we have learnt more and more about badgers, probably with the use of trail cameras which have provided us with so much information about the secret lives of badgers.

Now in 2024, not only are we able to use 4G trail cameras which send both images and videos directly and instantly to our phone, we now have a drone to record badger setts, to fly over the area, pick up land marks,  take images from above of the badger sett, the pathways, the bedding outside.  With this new technology, we can learn so much more.

TRAINING

Is it a badger or rabbit in there?

We get many calls from people asking for advice after they have found a "large" entrance hole perhaps in their garden, field or woodland.  Recognising the signs of an active badger sett is a very important part of our training programme.  Once trained correctly to recognise the signs of an active and in current use badger sett, the appropriate advice can be given and action taken as needed.

On the other side of the coin, recognising when a badger sett has been attacked or destroyed is equally important.  The correct monitoring of that sett, the images taken and the date the images were taken could see any court case, succeed or fail

Badger Watching evenings

Magical nights with our stripey friends

We love watching badgers in the Spring and Summer, but to avoid any disturbance we limit the number to just two people.  A successful badger watch is when the badgers don't know you are there.  Hiding your outline, not wearing perfume or aftershave, keeping quiet, not wearing clothes which rustle and most important, keeping downwind of the badger sett will help ensure you see the badgers.  Oh and a bit of luck too !  See a separate page on our top 12 tips for successful badger watching.

SOCIAL EVENTS

It's always nice to have a little get together, be it a "walk and talk" or meet at a cafe, have breakfast or just a cup of coffee to talk things through. Friendliness and inclusivity, helping each other as well as badgers has always been and always will be the ethos of Selby and Goole Badger Watch.
