Selby and Goole Badger Watch work quietly and try to keep below the radar. We seem to achieve more that way and we get things done.
So .... the sole purpose of Selby and Goole Badger Watch is to focus on badgers, although we will always help any animal in need, whatever the species. We help where we can and if we are unable to, we usually know someone who can.
We have many years experience in dealing with badger related issues
such as snaring, badger baiting, badger digging, badgers in the garden, badger cubs, watching badgers, surveying setts, monitoring setts and much much more.
Having said that, we are always willing to update our skills and knowledge as the science changes. And it does change. How can it not ? with all the new technology at our finger tips.
Back in the day, we read books by Ernest Neal, circa 1948, but times have changed, we have learnt more and more about badgers, probably with the use of trail cameras which have provided us with so much information about the secret lives of badgers. Without disturbing the badgers, using no glow, solar powered trail cameras, we can record the sounds they make, the chittering and the purring. We can watch with wonder, the first emergence of badger cubs in Spring time. Indeed, technology has provided us with so many opportunities to learn more.
So here we are today and not only are we able to use 4G trail cameras which send both images and videos directly and instantly to our phone, we have an amazing drone used to record badger setts, to fly over the area, pick up land marks, take images from above of the badger sett, the pathways, the bedding outside.
With this wonderful new technology, we can learn so much more.
This is a rural area with woodlands, forests, hedgerows and 1000's of acres of agricultural land. Selby and Goole have many long established badger setts. Many of these setts have been in existence for hundreds of years. Indeed one sett we know of is even mentioned in the Domesday Book !
Years ago, Selby was a magnet for badger diggers. Sett after sett was dug, year in year out. Then Selby Badger Watch was formed and we had more people with eyes on setts. Eventually a number of these individuals were caught and brought before the Courts. Badger digging incidents in Selby started to decrease. But with Goole, it's another matter. Crimes against badgers is up and we need to achieve in Goole what we achieved in Selby.
So we really do need good-hearted and willing people to monitor badger setts, both in Goole and in Selby. We cannot affort to let our guard down in Selby. So if you can offer help in monitoring badger setts in either Goole or Selby, please get in touch.
Training can be given if required but we are just grateful for having an extra pair of eyes on setts.
It's also great to have a few get togethers, a breakfast at a local cafe, a coffee or a walk to chat about all things badger.
We get many calls from people asking for advice after they have found a "large" entrance hole perhaps in their garden, field or woodland. Recognising the signs of an active badger sett is a very important part of our training programme. Once trained correctly to recognise the signs of an active and in current use badger sett, the appropriate advice can be given and action taken as needed.
On the other side of the coin, recognising when a badger sett has been attacked or destroyed is equally important. The correct monitoring of that sett, the images taken and the date the images were taken could see the success or failure of any court case.
We love watching badgers in the Spring and Summer, but to avoid any disturbance we limit the number to just two people. A successful badger watch is when the badgers don't know you are there. Hiding your outline, not wearing perfume or aftershave, keeping quiet, not wearing clothes which rustle and most important, keeping downwind of the badger sett will help ensure you see the badgers. Oh and a bit of luck too !
